Live Poll

Would you pay a monthly fee for a curbside composting service in your area?

Hillside Solutions has expanded its Curbside Composting Club to include the Florence neighborhood in Omaha. This expansion increases access to the company's food scrap and yard waste collection services for local residents.

Why it matters

Expanding composting access allows more households to divert food scraps and yard waste from local landfills. This program change provides a convenient way for residents to manage household waste and receive soil in return.

The Curbside Composting Club currently serves 475 households across the Omaha metro area. While the program expansion adds the Florence neighborhood, the specific impact on total participation volume remains under investigation.

The players

Hillside Solutions

An environmental services company that manages waste reduction and composting programs for households in the Omaha metro area.

The details

The program provides households with a designated cart for food scraps and yard waste, which is collected on a weekly basis. Residents can verify service eligibility for their specific address through the Hillside Solutions website. Upon initial sign-up and annually thereafter, subscribers receive 3 cubic feet of soil as part of the service.

The week of October 12, 2026, marks the launch of sign-ups for Florence residents.

Health Landscape

This program expansion reflects the broader integration of residential waste diversion into urban environmental health efforts. It aligns with the development of centralized curbside composting collection infrastructure to manage household organic waste effectively.

Residents in Florence can determine if their household is eligible for the weekly curbside pickup by checking the company website. It is worth discussing with your household whether the $25 monthly fee or the alternative $10 monthly drop-off service fits your waste management needs.

The takeaway

Composting can effectively reduce the volume of household waste sent to local landfills. Consider tracking your household's organic waste output to decide if a weekly pickup service or a lower-cost annual drop-off plan is a better fit for your lifestyle.
